SITB Redux (posted to my Yahoo fountain pen group)
It has been said that the one thing that distinguishes humans from other animals is that we are fixated on finding the one thing that distinguishes humans from other animals. (Glassman, 2010) If it were not I who had said it, I would feel considerably more comfortable in offering to disagree. Even so, I disagree. I am certain that the true distinguishing feature is our appetite for irony. Animals...

Cliché introduction alert: Social media offer an opportunity for near-real-time awareness of public health phenomena, including alerts and mapping. Today, if I were to map the ocurrance of ‘swine flu’ (or “the swine” as it has already become known among students) by tracking tweets, I would be able to see where the tweeters’ accounts were registered, but not where...

Her Grandfather's Pen (A Short Story)
I need to confess.
I need to tell you what I did.
But I need you to understand. Not just listen; not just nod your head. Not just make little sounds of sympathy like I’ve seen you do with others, when you were really only barely listening.
I need you to know.
Will you really listen?
Will you try to actually hear me?
I don’t expect you to say that what I did was OK. Or that...
Custom Pencil Cases and a Blast of Nostalgia
I have to admit that my fountain pen fetish is actually part of a larger office supply complex, not yet recognized by the DSM*. The beginning of the school year _still_ has me wondering whether I am going to be able to use the narrow- versus the wider-lined notebook paper. Or at least remembering wondering. It’s the ephemeral remnant of what used to be a huge back-to-school drama that,...

Hollywood Computer Laws
Hollywood Computer Laws Word processors never display a cursor. You never have to use the space-bar when typing long sentences. Movie characters never make typing mistakes. All monitors display inch-high letters. High-tech computers, such as those used by NASA, the CIA, or some such governmental institution, will have easy to understand graphical interfaces. Those that don’t,...

It’s been well over a month. And no, he wasn’t my neighbor, yes he speaks English (natively) and yes, I pointed out my house to him. Just a guy with a yard-maintenance business who seems not to have learned to recognize a business opportunity. Posted via web from Business Must Be Booming When… | Comment »

I’m trying to deliver a friend to her home in a cosmetically gated apartment complex, and the keypad is broken. I’m punching the thing to no avail. The Domino’s driver behind me is screaming and cursing. I know she will have to pay for the pizza if it’s delivered late, but she couldn’t open it either. Finally, someone manages to, and we all snake through the gate....
...the plumbing supply rep sells me a vanity and...
When I ask her why she never sold me a faucet she says “I just assumed you already had one.” A plumbing supply salesperson, no less. She also never mentioned that the vanity would arrive in about 17 pieces that would need to be assembled, or that it would not match the standard locations of the water supply and drain in the wall. And this is one of the two best plumbing supply places...

Anonymizer Sites
I’m not sure that I know all the things that sites do with our identities when we get there, but the social web brings with it some pretty scary opportunities. Here is one site/service that claims to make it possible for you to visit anonymously. Use it at your own discretion and, as far as that goes, your own risk. Let me know if there is a problem and I’ll remove this link.

Thank You, Dr. Gregg (the full version)
Many thanks to The Chapel Hill News for running a shorter version of this essay. BG
It’s taken six months for me to be able to write this. But now that gratitude can speak louder than grief, I want to publicly thank the veterinarian who gave our dog, Tofu, nearly 5 years that she almost certainly would not have had otherwise. Naturally, there is a story…

Toys
We console ourselves in different ways. For some reason, my choice seems to have been to try out new technologies. Here’s what I’ve been experimenting with over the last few days. First of all, there is this very web site. Tumblr.com is a simply amazing service. The ease with which we can post all sorts of interesting content is unprecedented in my experience. Spreading Tofu's Ashes
It’s only right to start this off as a tribute to a wonderful dog, with a bit of an apparent digression. Tofu was with us for 15 years — 16 Christmases. She died early in the morning of the day after Christmas.
I picked up her ashes last night at the vet. Soon, I’ll drive to the pond where she used to swim so enthusiastically and sprinkle a bit of Tofu back into the pond.
I...
